I just vidcapped several new DVD's for the first time in a couple of months - now I can _finally_ get more DVD's from Netflix, because those three had been out for over two months! The ones I worked on today are "Breakfast at Tiffany's", "Love in the Afternoon" and "The Red Shoes". Might try to do some more tomorrow, or I might do some of those MPEG clips that are crowding up one of my partitions.
I picked up a new DVD today which is going to go up to the top of the list for vidcapping - "Our Man Flint", starring James Coburn and Gila Golan. Think "Austin Powers" in the _real_ 1960's with lots of beauties in the haute couture of the period, pre-flowerpower.
Sorry if today's entry is later than usual this morning - I got to doing some other stuff and almost forgot to come back here! Anyway, I'm fixing to start vidcapping DVD's again, and about time too, because I have almost 20 of them piled up here waiting for me to work on them.
Today's POTD is of the great '50's movie dancer Cyd Charisse in a sexy promo pose:

Today's Picture of the Day features classic Hollywood cheesecake in opera gloves, as we take a look at starlet Patricia Wymore in a pose typical of old-time movie publicity:
Over 650 images of opera-gloved celebrities from the 1950's and 1960's can be had by visiting Opera-Gloved Celebrities of the 1950's and 1960's!
Good morning, folks! Yesterday marked the fourteenth day straight - two weeks even - that For the Love of Opera Gloves has received more than 200 visitors. In fact, in the past two weeks, I estimate that we've taken in over 3,000 "unique" visitors. (By the way, "unique" in webmastering parlance means a hit from a disparate source; it's a little like "sortie" in pilot talk.) Thanks, and keep them coming!

Today's Picture of the Day comes from the new update - a two-fer of the late British comedienne Kay Kendall in costume for her role in what many consider to be her best movie, "Les Girls":
More of Kay Kendall, plus many more images from "Les Girls" (which also starred Mitzi Gaynor and Taina Elg, also in opera gloves) can be found at The Kay Kendall and "Les Girls" Glove Gallery.
ANNOUNCEMENT: A new update is ready for public viewing at For the Love of Opera Gloves! The Classic Stars department has been completely overhauled; the process actually started months ago, but 76 directories have now been totally rebuilt, with new thumbnails, new HTML, hundreds of new images. Please see the What's New at For the Love of Opera Gloves page for the complete list of pages affected by this update.

Today's Picture of the Day shows off Italian superstar Sophia Loren in black opera gloves in a photo dating from the 1970's:
For the Love of Opera Gloves' collection of gloved images of La Loren may be visited at The Sophia Loren Glove Gallery.
Uploaded another 28 directories of Classic Stars overnight, which means over 2/3 of the update is now complete. There are only 22 directories left to go, which will be done this evening. The update might even be posted tomorrow morning if I have the time to make the announcements to the appropriate places.

Here's another fashion-related photo as today's Picture of the Day. This is a 1956 evening gown by the designer Jacques Fath:
Opera Gloves in 1950's Fashions has nearly 400 images of the grand fashions of the 1950's, and I'm always looking for more!

We didn't - quite - crack the one-week record for visitors to For the Love of Opera Gloves, after all; the total for the week ending yesterday (September 29) was 1,776, according to Extreme Tracking. However, that is still an exceptionally impressive figure, seeing that throughout most of this year, unique visitors per week have averaged some 1,300 - 1,400.
We've smashed the previous record for visitors per month, though! As of the last check a few minutes ago, we have had 6,615 unique visitors for September, bettering the previous record (6,402) by more than 200. Look for 20 to 30 more to be added on to that tally by midnight.
Today has also been one of the busiest days on record; 307 visitors so far. It probably won't get high enough by midnight to match or exceed the one-day record of 354 set this past winter, but it's a good round figure anyway.
Thanks for all the hits - and don't forget the Amazon tip jar! :)
I've completed updates for one-third of the Classic Stars galleries (26 folders/directories) and am uploading them now. However, the update will not formally be posted until all 76 folders have been uploaded and the Index and What's New pages have been brought current and posted. This will require at least two more days; with luck, though, the new material will be ready for public viewing by Thursday evening.

The next update will be a complete renovation of the Classic Stars section. I finished re-thumbnailing the various directories (76 of them) and generating new HTML for the various pages, and will be putting it all together over the next few days. I'm not sure yet when the update will actually go up, but as usual, I intend to go for no later than Friday (which will this week be Oct. 4th). I may have to upload in stages, given the slowness of 56K and the notoriously curmudgeonly FTP server, because there's over 140 MB to go up.
The thing here is that, while the majority of these images have previously been posted, I've re-sorted every image into its own folder based on who they're of. The principle here is better organization for updating and also, hopefully, for loading and searching.
Once the Classic Stars directory is done, there'll be only one major category (apart from the vidcaps) left to do, the "Modern" department, with all the various celebs of the present day who don't quite have enough pictures to warrant their very own gallery pages. I'm already starting to build up new pic collections for future updates.
We're on the verge of breaking a couple of records. Right now, over 6,100 unique visitors, according to Extreme Tracking, have come to For the Love of Opera Gloves during the month of September. The single-month record is 6,402, set in January of this year; we need less than 300 more unique visitors to set a new record, and I think we can do it by tomorrow. A more difficult challenge will be to break the single-week record for visitors. As of now, we have over 1,600 unique visitors for the week; the record is 1,788, set in February 2002. We need about 150 to 160 more unique visitors today.
The 200+-plus trend continues. Yesterday marked the 9th day in a row that this site has received 200 or more unique visitors (by Extreme Tracking's count); I don't think that there has been any other stretch of time where visits and hits have been at such a sustained level.
All visitors old and new: _please_ consider making a donation to support For the Love of Opera Gloves through the Amazon Honor System tip box (on the left of your screen, and available in many places throughout the website itself). All donations go directly into support of For the Love of Opera Gloves through such means as purchase of HTML and other software, purchase of new source material, upgrading of server capacity and capability, better computer equipment for maintenance and expansion of the site, and the like. In particular, I want to be able to upgrade to DSL or cable so that I can upload updates faster; this 56K dialup drives me crazy when I have to take a full 24 hours to upload 140 MB (as I did at the last update!)
Good Sunday, everyone! I didn't actually get to work on the update yesterday, but I collected quite a few interesting new photos, chiefly from British sources. Among them, I got a nice bunch of Joan Collins images, which will prove, when you see them, that she _still_ has what Elinor Glyn called "It"! Since La Collins has always been one of my favorite glove-wearers, today's Picture of the Day:
